Have you ever thought how piano can be changed. The musical instruments that everyone loves to play and listen to has been like this for some centuries and has served the purpose well, but that hasn’t stopped innovators to change the way piano is looks like and works and modernize it using today’s technology.
Now folks from design firm ROLI have created a piano called Seaboard Grand. The Seaboard Grand features a single toned interface and its keys are made up of foam like material. This piano not only features a new design than traditional pianos but it also works a lot differently and features a unique mechanism. The soft pushy keys of Seaboard Grand are pressure sensitive, which means it they could alter the sound based on the pressure applied by the user. The pressure sensitive keys allows users to pitch vibrations and do volume adjustments while playing.
The company calls the pressure sensor as ”high-resolution haptic pressure sensor” as it is capable of accepting tactile feedback as well as 3D gesture inputs. This is not the only product ROLI aims to use the pressure sensor as it hopes to introduce a varierty of other products similar to Searbaord Grand piano.
Although the concept behind this new type of keyboard is pretty interesting and innovative, it still is for enthusiasts and hipsters and right now is not a full fledge replacement to the real piano. Also we don’t believe it is good enough to be used by professional piano players and musicians. However it does allows newbies to learn playing quite speedily than the older pianos because it is less complex to play Seaboard Grand.
The company behind Seaboard Grand is going to take pre-orders next month and will only be selling 88 units. The pricing details are not known yet.
