All of us have been forced to spit out the chewing gum by our teachers during the class but now a study has founded out that teachers were wrong and they should have allowed students to use chewing gum during their lectures. According a research chewing gum during tasks that require concentration increases the ability to focus.
We have heard about chewing gum’s positive effect on our thinking but now we have a research based study to prove it. The study was conducted at the Cardiff University in which it divided a group of 38 people in two groups. Both of these groups were given a test in which they had to listen one to nine numbers in random order and them detect sequences of odd numbers. They were judged on their accuracy and speed. Based on this study researchers found that the participants who had chewed gum during the test had quicker response times as well as more accuracy.
Not only that but the group that was having chewing gum during the test performed even better towards the end of the test, unlike the one that was not chewing anything like majority of students taking lectures in schools and universities today.
One of the research named Kate Morgan commented on this report that explores chewing gum’s effect on ability to focus as
“Interestingly participants who didn’t chew gum performed slightly better at the beginning of the task but were overtaken by the end. This suggests that chewing gum helps us focus on tasks that require continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time.”
This study proves how insignificant and unlikely things can have an impact on our abilities to think, work and respond to certain actions and increase our focus during our day to day tasks.
So next time your teacher forces you to spit out your chewing gum or get out of her class, just quote this report.
