Every now and then we come across projects on crowd funding websites like Kickstarter that simply blow our minds. One such project is Micro Phone Lens by Thomas Larson. The Micro Phone Lens is an accessory for smartphones or tablets that turns the normal camera of the device into a fully functional and digital microscope.
The small device that is almost same in size as the camera opening of the device, which makes is super portable and easy to use. Since the lens can be placed on top of the camera opening of the device users can not only view microscopic images on their smartphone or tablet’s screen in realtime but they can also take pictures as well as record videos. These images then can be shared with friends over the internet. The great thing about this accessory is that you don’t need any special app or software to use it.
The Micro Phone Lens is optically identical to glass and is made with platinum catalyst technology. The design of this product has been made possible with patent pending platinum catalysed silicone technology. Thanks to its small size no one won’t even notice that you have some sort of special lens covering your camera. The lens has been made with such a material that it does not get scratching. As far as dust goes you can simply wash the lens with soap and water and reuse it whenever you want.
Micro Phone Lens supports a wide range of devices and is not confined to any model or brand. Users just have to stick it on their camera opening and they are good to go. Using this lens is even simpler as users can just take their device closer to whatever thing they want to see in microscopic view. Users can tap on their screen to focus on any particular area of the microscopic image just like they would do while taking normal photos with their gadget.
Micro Phone Lens for smartphones and tablets features a base magnification of 15X and is capable of magnifying to up to 60x with phone zoom. The product’s makers recommend that it should be used with cameras that have 5 or more megapixels. the product diameter is 6mm, making it very small and portable.
While the Micro Phone Lens with 15X magnification is already awesome the makers of this accessory are hoping to create a 150X version of these lens available in the future. This according to them will allow health and disease prevention in the developing world where users will be able to easily afford these cheaper and more portable microscopes.
On its Kickstarter campaign Micro Phone Lens project already has over 3,800 backers who have pledged around $70,000, which is much higher than the project’s initial goal of $5,000. A unit of Micro Phone Lens is available through Kickstarter for a price that is as little as $12. Although all $12 spots are gone you can still grab a lens for yourself by pledging $15 or more to the project here. The estimated delivery of this product is said to be in October 2013.
