Popular open source media player VLC by VideoLAN has now been released on the iOS App Store and is now available for download. The VLC for iOS app supports both iPhone and iPad. This is not the first time VLC has been released in the Apple’s mobile marketplace. The app was available on the iOS platform two years ago too when it was pulled from the store by its creators.
Now the app has been released once again and its second coming has made many iOS users very happy. VLC player is famous for is ease of use and features. The player supports a video range of audio and video formats.
The app brings a number of new features that were not part of the app previously. The most notable feature of VLC for iOS includes WiFi upload. This feature allows users to transfer media files from their Mac or Windows PC to VLC for iOS using the WiFi network. All users need to do is open the specified link on their desktop browser and select the files they want to transfer to their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. This is a great feature since users don’t need to attach wire to their device and use iTunes to do the transfer. VLC for iOS also supports iTunes sharing feature as well.
VLC for iOS also feature Dropbox integration. Using the Dropbox integration users can download media files stored on their online account right from within the VLC player. While the integration feature is great it would have been better if users could also stream videos stored in their Dropbox account instead of just downloading it. We hope VideoLan adds this feature to VLC for iOS as well.
While playing a video users can adjust different aspects of the playback to make it suitable for themselves. This includes ability to adjust brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma. Adjusting these aspects of video playback is quite easy as users can change these settings. The changes are made in real-time, which means users can see what settings suits them the best without exiting the menu.
Overall the app has not changed a lot and looks almost identical to how it looked two years ago before getting pulled. The new version however has been rewritten and features all the new technologies used in modern media players. There are some visual elements of the app that are different from the previous release but the overall user-interface is same. The files are shown in a list view with thumbnail on one side.
VLC for iOS just like all other versions of the player is open source. VideoLAN says that it will make the code of this app available for everyone by tomorrow. The company hopes that VLC for iOS will stay in the App Store for good and it won’t have to pull the app from world’s largest store ever again due to copyright issues.
