Although Google Glass is going to get released in the last quarter of this year the excitement and buzz surrounding this revolutionary gadget is unprecedented. Google is taking full advantage of media’s interest in the device and is teasing everyone with different features of Google Glass. Recently the company took the stage at the SXSW event to reveal further information about its upcoming product.
Google announced that the Google Glass will have its own library of apps that will be available to users. This ‘library of apps’ will be similar to the Play Store for Android and will allows the users to download different types of content for their device. Google announced that Google Play will feature Google+ integration and a customized version of Gmail. It also announced that different popular apps will be available for the device at launch and showed of some of them including Path, Evernote, The New York Times and Evernote.
The apps for Google Glass will definitely be different from what users are used to of on their smartphones or tablets. As there isn’t a touch interface the apps will heavily rely on voice, camera and text to speech capabilities of the device and different tasks will be carried with these. As for the magazine app such as New York Times users will only be able to see the headlines in their HUD. They can tell the device to read it aloud using their voice.
Google wants to limit what third party apps could do for the user so they don’t distract them from their daily routines as the purpose of the device is to be used during the day to day tasks of the user.
The fact that Google Glass will run third party applications truly make it a revolutionary device and will make it even more useful. Imagine using Instagram on Google Glass and sharing photos while doing whatever you are doing. The future seems very fascinating with infinite possibilities.
