The Blackberry maker RIM at its event today has made some really big announcements that will have a huge impact on company’s future and its users. One of the most important announcements RIM made today is that it is no longer called Research in Motion (RIM) as the Canadian company has officially rebranded itself as Blackberry, its widely popular product name.
Apart from re-branding itself Blackberry (formerly RIM) also announced new flagship devices and its highly anticipated and new operating system called Blackberry OS 10 that will power its smartphones and tablets. The Blackberry OS 10 brings a ton of features that will only be available for the new Blackberry devices as well as 2011′s Blackberry Playbook tablet. Instead of taking the usual approarch of allying with either Google (Android) or Microsoft (Windows Phone) most companies have taken, Blackberry decided to rebuild the OS despite the immense pressure to keep an end to end control of its devices. The new OS has some awesome features including gestures, great multitasking, social integration, work and pleasure modes, home screen for icons, BBM, Blackberry Hub, TimeShift and more. The UI of the new Blackberry is a lot different than it was before and provides a good experience to the users.
Along with the software Blackberry also introduced two new phones that are running it. The first phone is a full touch screen device called the Blackberry Z10. It features a 4.2-inch display with a resolution of 356 pixels per inch. Internally it features a dual-core processor, 16GB memory, sensors such as accelerometer and gyro along with other essentials etc. Along with the 16GB internal storage the device also has a microSD card slot for expansion of memory. On the outside the device features only one button which can be used to power on/off or unlocking the device. Blackberry Z10 will be available on multiple carriers in the US for $199 on contract.
The second smartphone Blackberry announced today is called the Blackberry Q10, which features the traditional Blackberry design and full QWERTY keyboard. It also has the dual-core processor just like the Z10. Interestingly the Q10 has both QWERTY keyboard and touch screen that provides a touch and type experience to users. It features a 3.1-inch AMOLED display, 4G network support and more.
At launch the Blackberry App World will feature over 70,000 applications. It will most big names at launch including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Rdio, LinkedIn, Evernote, Foursquare among others. The number is expected to increase soon as different developers will start developing for the platform as soon as devices are out in comsumer’s hands.
It looks like Blackberry has made a nice comeback and can potentially pose a threat to leading smartphones of today including the iPhone.
