What we have here today are two unlikely competitors; the iPad mini and the Nexus 4. I use the term unlikely because when two devices are compared, they are usually of the same genre, but that is not the case with these two. The Google Nexus 4 is the latest Smartphone from the repertoire of Google and house of LG that sold out like hot cake on the day of its worldwide launch of the Google Play Store. The iPad mini on the other hand is the first 7.9 inch tablet ever launched by Apple Inc. Below you will find a comparison between the two devices on various comparable grounds.no 320 GPU, LG, 1 GHz dual core, Cortex A9, PowerVR SGX543MP2, Graphic Processor,
Raw Power: Who’s got what?
The Nexus 4 is packed with a quad core, 1.5 GHz Krait processor from Qualcomm and is supported by an Adreno 320 GPU. The latest LG-Google offspring also sports 2 Gigabytes of RAM to top it all off. On paper at least, the iPad mini tablet pales in comparison to our competing Smartphone as it only has a 1 GHz dual core (Cortex A9) processor and 512 MB of RAM. Though it has arguably the more powerful PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics processor, one has to admit that the Nexus 4 just seems to be way ahead, as far as raw power is concerned.
Display
Although Apple revolutionized the portable display industry with its retina display and insanely high resolutions, the iPad mini is sadly an exception. The Nexus 4’s 768 x 1280 pixels IPS LCD display with 318 ppi, just makes a fool out of the 1024 x 768 pixels retina display of the iPad mini with 162 ppi only. The iPad 3 had an unbelievably detailed and beautiful screen; unfortunately, the iPad mini missed out on that one.
Camera
Although the Nexus 4 has the higher megapixel count at 8, both the devices are capable of recording at 30 fps and at 1080p quality. The iPad mini’s 5 megapixel camera however, does not have a flash, or offers as many options while shooting as its competition. As far as the secondary camera is concerned nevertheless, there isn’t much to choose from as the iPad mini (1.2 MP) and the Nexus 4 (1.3 MP) has almost the same specs in this department.
Battery
Being a tablet and thus having a larger battery, along with the ability of Apple to provide its consumers with devices that last in terms of the battery backup, the iPad mini offers a better battery backup than the Google Nexus 4. Make no mistake though, the Google phone isn’t too bad either with its 504 minutes of talk time offering, but the iPad mini is just not “mini” in this case!
Storage
You can call it a shameful marketing strategy or you can call it “simplicity”, call it whatever you like, but the iPad mini, just like all Apple products, does not sport an SD card slot. Which means that if you buy a 16 GB variant, that’s all you will get (much less in reality as the OS and other inbuilt software takes up a few GBs). Fortunately for the iPad mini however, strangely enough, the Nexus 4 also has followed the same route, which means that even with this Smartphone, you will NOT get the option to add an external memory card. This is why it’s pretty much a stalemate here.
The cards are on the table and now it’s up to you to decide who’s got the specs you need.
